If you have a PC or a laptop that does not have a hard drive for a number of reasons, you can still use it. All you need is a USB flash drive and an operational computer.
You can have a light OS installed on your USB flash drive and make it persistent so it can store any data you may want while using the OS installed.
In this tutorial we will chose Xubuntu Linux for our OS.
Download the Xubuntu version you want from the official website here.
Download the Universal USB installer from here.
(Press the Download UUI button in middle of the website)
Insert your USB thumb drive and make a quick format.
Run Universal USB installer and chose Xubuntu from the Step 1 drop down list.
Chose your Xubuntu iso image at Step 2.
Select your USB flash drive at Step 3.
Select the size of the persistent file you want to store changes to at Step 4.
Click the create button and wait for the process to be completed.
Be very cautious when selecting the USB drive letter at Step 3, as this step erases all data in the selected drive. Be patient and wait for the process to end even if the progress bar seems to have no progress.
When you power up the computer without the hard drive you must enter the bios and select usb boot or add boot from usb, depending on the bios version you have.
