A long time ago there was a young man and a woman sitting on the top of a mountain. They were both very sad and very sceptic. An owl came and sat next to them. The man said "Please go away and leave us to our sorrow". The owl then said "I can see you are both sad. May i ask why?".The man replied
" Well,,we are living inside a cave and we have to hunt to earn our food. We just feel we need more than that."
" So what is that you seek?" the owl asked. "I think we need more intelligence" the man said. The owl lowered her look and started thinking. Then she asked "Is that all you need?". "Yes" the man said and the woman agreed with him. "The snake can give you intelligence, but are you sure this is all you want?" the owl asked."Yes, that is all we want" the man replied. The owl looked at them both and flew away.
After a while the snake came and gave them both intelligence, that their children could inherit from them. Not long after, they started building houses, villages, tools. Living became easier and hunting less risky.Soon they invented money, instead of trading and their population increased. They divided the society to rich and poor and soon envy and hate was born. Killing each other and animals for fun became an everyday habit, as well as slavery due to the need of more money or power.
The man started to see all this and was sad again. He left and went in the top of the mountain he once sat, when he was young. He sat there for days while sadness was all over his wrinkled face. The owl came again and sat next to him. "Why are you sad?" the owl asked. "This isn't what i expected from people" the man replied. "I gave you what you asked for" the owl said.
"Yes, but this isn't what we actually needed. The snake must have deceived us" the man said. "No, the snake gave you the intelligence you wanted" the owl replied. "Then what went wrong?" the man asked.
"You should have asked for wisdom. Now it's too late. The animals will stop speaking to you because of the suffering and the injustice you brought on this earth. But i will give you wisdom. You will have it only for a brief time before you pass away, so you can acknowledge the bad you have done and realise it's too late to change them. This is the gift and the punishment i'm giving you"
the owl said and then flew away.
And the man sat there crying in anger and sorrow knowing the bad he have done and realising he can do nothing to change that.
